Roots on the Farm and Early Lessons
Jim’s remarkable journey did not begin in a corporate boardroom. It began on a multigenerational family farm in east-central Indiana, where he learned lessons that would help shape his life and leadership: hard work, honesty, responsibility, integrity, and respect for where our food comes from. While attending high school, Jim worked in a butcher shop to help save for college, gaining an early appreciation for food safety, sanitation, and the realities of operating a family business.
He went on to attend Purdue University’s School of Agriculture, studying food science with a concentration in chemistry. His professional career began as a bench chemist before expanding into manufacturing, operations, quality assurance, acquisitions, and executive leadership. Those experiences prepared Jim for what would become an extraordinary career.
A Legacy of Quality and Leadership at NOW
In 1995, Jim joined NOW Foods as Plant Manager. Through decades of dedication and leadership, he advanced through the organization, eventually becoming CEO of NOW Health Group in 2014. Under Jim’s leadership, NOW has experienced significant growth and global expansion while remaining committed to the principles established by founder Elwood Richard, providing high-quality natural products at affordable prices while doing the right things for the right reasons.
Jim has also helped position NOW as an important industry voice for quality, transparency, scientific integrity, and consumer protection. The company’s testing initiatives have helped bring attention to concerns involving potency, labeling, authenticity, and adulteration within the dietary supplement marketplace. As Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Natural Products Association, he works alongside industry leaders on issues affecting dietary supplements, natural products, quality standards, and consumer access. His contributions have earned significant industry recognition, including being named Nutritional Outlook’s 2025 Best of the Industry Leader.
